How to Toilet Train a Puppy: The Humane Approach and Canine Communication Secrets
Share
Toilet Training - It's Not Training, It's Communication
Many people think that toilet training is simply teaching a dog "where it can and where it can't." But it's actually much deeper.
It's about:
- Understanding how dogs communicate
- Patience and empathy
- The psychological connection between you and your puppy
- A humane approach without punishment and stress
My philosophy is simple: before training - understanding. before commands - communication. before rules - connection.
Why Do Dogs Pee and Poop All the Time? It's Not Just Physiology
Many people think that dogs pee and poop just because they "need to go to the bathroom." But that's only part of the truth.
Dogs Leave "Letters" - It's Their Language
When a dog urinates or poops, it leaves a message for other dogs . It's like this:
- 📧 "I was here" - marking the territory
- 📧 "I am male/female" - gender information
- 📧 "I am 3 months old" - age information
- 📧 "I am healthy/sick" - health status
- 📧 "I am nervous/calm" - emotional state
- 📧 "I ate this and that" - nutritional information
Another dog will come, bark, and READ this "letter"!
He will understand:
- Who was here?
- When was it?
- What's your mood?
- Is it friendly or dangerous?
- Is it worth getting to know?
This is chemical communication - more complex than our language!
Dogs Also Communicate with Us
The problem is that we don't understand this language .
When a puppy pees in the house, he may be trying to say:
- "I'm restless alone" (separation anxiety)
- "I'm scared" (stress)
- "I don't know where it is possible" (misunderstanding)
- "I'm too young to control" (physiology)
- "I am sick" (health problem)
Instead of punishment - we need to UNDERSTAND what the puppy is trying to say.
The Golden Rule: How Many Months - So Many Hours
Here is a simple but very important rule for training puppies:
PUPPY'S AGE IN MONTHS = NUMBER OF HOURS IT CAN KEEP
Examples:
- 🐕 2 month old puppy = can hold for ~2 hours
- 🐕 3 month old puppy = can hold for ~3 hours
- 🐕 4 month old puppy = can hold for ~4 hours
- 🐕 6 month old puppy = can hold for ~6 hours
This means:
- A 2-month-old puppy needs to be taken out every 2 hours
- 3 months - every 3 hours
- Etc.
Why Is This Important?
Because the puppy's bladder and intestines are not yet developed. He physically CANNOT hold it any longer. This is not disobedience - this is physiology!
If you wait any longer, the puppy will inevitably do it in the house. And it will be YOUR fault, not his.
Additional Times When to Definitely Take Out:
- ⏰ In the morning - immediately after sleep
- ⏰ After eating - within 15-30 minutes.
- ⏰ After the game - activity stimulates
- ⏰ After sleep - any, not just night sleep
- ⏰ Before bed - last output
- ⏰ When a puppy starts sniffing the ground - it's a sign!
Humane Approach: Without Punishment, With Understanding
My approach to training is only one - HUMANE.
What Does This Mean?
❌ NEVER:
- ❌ Do not put your dog's nose in urine or feces
- ❌ Don't hit with a newspaper or hand
- ❌ Do not shout or threaten
- ❌ Do not punish after the fact (if you find urine later - the dog will NOT UNDERSTAND what is being punished for)
- ❌ Don't close one for a long time
- ❌ Do not use any physical punishment
✓ ALWAYS:
- ✓ Praise and reward when they do something outside
- ✓ Be patient and understanding
- ✓ Watch for signs and exit on time
- ✓ Create a positive association with the outdoor toilet
- ✓ Understand that this is a process that takes time
Why Don't Punishments Work?
1. Puppy Doesn't Understand Logic
If you punish the puppy after 5 minutes or later - he does not understand what for . He only sees that the owner is angry, but does not know why.
2. Punishment Creates Fear, Not Understanding
The puppy doesn't learn "you can't pee in the house", but "the owner is dangerous and unpredictable".
3. Punishment Damages Relationships
Instead of trust and love, fear and stress appear.
4. Stress Makes the Situation Worse
A restless puppy urinates even MORE FREQUENTLY (from stress!).
Before Training - Understanding. Before Trainer - Psychologist
Here is my basic philosophy:
Many people immediately go to a training trainer and say, "Teach my dog not to poop in the house!"
But it's not a training problem. It's a psychology problem .
First of all - Let's understand ourselves
Before training a dog, we need to understand:
- 🤔 Am I giving enough time? (do I take it out every 2-3 hours?)
- 🤔 Do I understand puppy signs? (sniffing, spinning)
- 🤔 Am I patient? (Do I get upset when my puppy makes mistakes?)
- 🤔 Am I consistent? (Do I always praise correct behavior?)
- 🤔 Have I created a safe environment? (free from stress and fear?)
Second - Let's understand the PUPPY
- 🐕 Why is he doing this? (physiology? stress? misunderstanding?)
- 🐕 What does he need? (more frequent outings? peace? time?)
- 🐕 How does he feel? (worried? scared? understanding?)
- 🐕 Is he healthy? (maybe urinary tract infection?)
Only Then - Training
When we understand ourselves and the puppy, when we have solved the psychological problems - only then can we go to the trainer.
But most of the time, when we understand everything correctly, training is not even needed . The puppy learns naturally because:
- ✓ He feels safe
- ✓ He understands what is expected of him
- ✓ He receives positive reinforcement
- ✓ He has enough opportunities
A Practical Guide: How to Train Humanely
Step 1: Create a Routine
Puppies love predictability!
- ⏰ Eat at the same time
- ⏰ Take out at the same time
- ⏰ Follow the same route (at least at first)
- ⏰ Use the same command ("Toilet", "Work", "Pee-pee")
Step 2: Watch for the Signs
A puppy ALWAYS shows signs before urinating:
- 👃 Begins to sniff the ground intensely
- 🔄 Spinning in a circle
- 😟 Restless, walking back and forth
- 🚪 Going to the door
- 👀 Looks at you (once they've learned to ask)
When you see these signs - get them out IMMEDIATELY!
Step 3: Positive Reinforcement
When a puppy does it outside:
- 🎉 IMMEDIATELY (within 1-2 seconds) you praise: "Good dog! Great! Cool!"
- 🍖 Give a treat (small but tasty)
- ❤️ Pat, show joy
- 🎾 Play briefly (if the puppy likes it)
Important: The reward must be immediate so that the puppy understands the connection: "I did it outside = good thing!"
Step 4: If It Happened At Home - Stay Calm
If you find urine or feces in your home:
- 😌 Clean gently (use enzymatic cleaner to remove odor)
- 🤐 Don't say anything to the puppy (if more than 2 seconds have passed - he doesn't understand)
- 🤔 Think about why this happened (did you wait too long? stress? illness?)
- 📝 Adjust your behavior (get outside more often, reduce stress)
If you caught it "in the heat" (the puppy is peeing NOW):
- 👏 Clap your hands (not loudly, just to get attention)
- 🏃 Quickly but calmly, pick it up and take it outside
- ⏳ Wait until it's finished outside
- 🎉 Praise and reward!
Step 5: Patience and Time
Payment takes:
- ⏱️ For 2-4 month old puppies: 4-6 months
- ⏱️ For 4-6 month old puppies: 2-4 months
- ⏱️ For older puppies: 1-3 months
Every puppy is different. Some learn in a month, others need six months.
Be patient. This is a normal process.
When to See a Dog Psychologist?
If:
- 🚨 Puppy is over 6 months old but still regularly urinates in the house
- 🚨 The puppy was potty trained, but suddenly started urinating again
- 🚨 Puppy only urinates when you are not around (separation anxiety)
- 🚨 Puppy peeing out of fear (submissive urination)
- 🚨 Puppy shows other signs of stress (trembling, aggression, destructiveness)
A dog psychologist will help:
- ✓ Identify the real problem (not the symptom, but the cause)
- ✓ Create a personalized plan
- ✓ Teach you to understand puppy language
- ✓ Solve emotional and psychological problems
- ✓ Create a strong bond between you and your puppy
Common Mistakes
❌ Mistake 1: Punishing After the Fact
The puppy doesn't understand. It just creates fear.
❌ Mistake 2: Waiting Too Long
Remember: how many months - so many hours!
❌ Mistake 3: Not praising good behavior
Positive reinforcement is the key to success.
❌ Mistake 4: Being Impatient
It's a process. Mistakes are normal.
❌ Mistake 5: Ignoring Signs of Stress
If the puppy is restless - look for the reason, do not punish.
Conclusion: Understanding Before Training
Toilet training is not just about technique. It's about:
- ✓ Communication - let's understand dog language
- ✓ Empathy - let's empathize with the puppy's experience
- ✓ Patience - it takes time
- ✓ Humane approach - without punishment and stress
- ✓ Psychological understanding - before training
Remember:
Dogs leave "letters" - that's their language. They communicate with us, but we often don't understand. Instead of punishment - let's listen. Instead of anger - let's understand. Instead of training - let's build a connection.
When we understand a puppy, training becomes unnecessary. Because understanding is the best teacher.
