Have you bought a puppy? All about proper nutrition and the benefits of Royal Canin

Congratulations on getting a puppy! This is a wonderful and responsible step. One of the first questions all new owners face is: what to feed a puppy so that it grows up healthy, strong, and happy?

The first months of life are critically important. This is when immunity, bones, muscles, and even character are formed. Proper nutrition during this period is an investment in your pet's entire life.

Why do puppies need special food?

During their first year of life, puppies reach 70-80% of their adult weight. Such intensive growth requires up to 2 times more energy than an adult dog, more protein for muscle formation, a proper calcium and phosphorus ratio for bones, DHA fatty acid for brain development, and antioxidants to strengthen immunity.

Adult dog food simply cannot meet these needs. Inappropriate food can lead to bone deformities, growth disorders, and a weak immune system.

How to feed a puppy correctly?

Up to 6 months, a puppy should be fed 3-4 times a day in small portions, later - 2 times a day. You will find the portion size on the food bag - it is calculated based on the current and estimated adult dog weight.

Fresh water should always be available, especially if you are feeding dry food.

Products we recommend

For medium breed puppies, Royal Canin Puppy Medium — a balanced formula with prebiotics, DHA, and an antioxidant complex for harmonious growth, is perfect. For Yorkshire Terrier puppies - Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Puppy, created specifically for this breed: tiny kibble, skin and coat care.

If a puppy is born without mother's milk or there is not enough - BABYDOG MILK milk substitute ensures proper growth from the first days of life. For older dogs who already need joint support, we recommend ROYAL CANIN Joint & Ageing Adult Chews.

How to switch to new food?

Food transition should occur gradually over 7 days: for the first 2 days - 75% old and 25% new, days 3-4 - 50% each, days 5-6 - 25% old and 75% new, day 7 - completely new food. Monitor digestion, energy, and appetite.
