3 AM: When Your Pet Hasn't Eaten for 2 Days
I remember that night. My client Rasa called me at 3 a.m., crying.
"Dmitry, Muse hasn't eaten for 2 days. She's just lying there. I don't know what to do. Is this serious?"
Yes. It was serious. The muse had a dental problem.
But here's the important thing: it's not always serious . Sometimes a dog or cat won't eat for completely innocent reasons.
In this article, I will tell you about the 12 most common reasons why your pet may refuse food. And most importantly, when you need to urgently see a vet, and when you can solve it yourself .
IMPORTANT: When Should You See a Vet Immediately?
Before we begin - here's when you need a vet IMMEDIATELY:
DOGS - See a vet immediately if:
- Not eating for 24+ hours + lethargy/weakness
- Not eating + vomiting several times
- Not eating + bloody diarrhea
- Not eating + bloated belly
- Not eating + labored breathing
- Puppy hasn't eaten for 12+ hours
CATS - Urgently visit a vet if:
- Not eating for 24+ hours (this is SERIOUS for cats!)
- Not eating + yellow skin/eyes
- Not eating + hiding/not socializing
- Not eating + vomiting
- Not eating + difficulty urinating
- Kitten hasn't eaten for 8+ hours
Why is this so important for cats?
Cats can develop hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver buildup) after just 24-48 hours of starvation. It is FATAL if left untreated.
So if your cat isn't eating, it's more serious than for a dog.
12 Reasons Why Your Pet Isn't Eating
Reason #1: Food Quality or Freshness
What's Happening:
The food has gone bad, lost its flavor, or is just... boring.
How to Recognize:
- The pet smelled the food and left.
- Eats treats, but not main meals
- Previously ate this food normally
- No other symptoms
Solution:
- Check the expiration date
- Is the food stored correctly? (tightly sealed packaging)
- Try a new package
- Warm up wet food (stronger smell)
- Add a little warm water to the dry food
Pro Tip: Dry food retains its flavor for ~6 weeks after opening. After that, it can get boring.
Reason #2: Dental and Oral Problems
What's Happening:
It hurts to chew. This is one of the MOST COMMON reasons, especially for older pets.
How to Recognize:
- Approaches food but does not eat
- Tries to chew but gives up
- Eats only one side of the mouth
- Drooling
- Bad breath
- Rubbing his nose on things
Solution:
- VETERINARY - necessary check-up
- Teeth cleaning or extraction may be necessary
- Temporarily - wet food (easier to chew)
- Mix food with water (softer)
Muse had this exact problem. After dental treatment, she was able to eat normally again.
Reason #3: Digestive Problems
What's Happening:
Abdominal pain, nausea, discomfort.
How to Recognize:
- Not eating + stomach rumbling
- Eats grass (dogs)
- Vomiting yellow liquid (empty stomach)
- Restlessness, walking
- Strange stools
Solution:
- If the case is mild - 12-24 hour fasting (water only)
- Then a light meal (boiled chicken + rice)
- If it continues - a veterinarian
- In the future - food for sensitive stomachs
Reason #4: Stress and Anxiety
What's Happening:
Changes in the environment, new people, sounds - stress reduces appetite.
Common Triggers:
- Moving
- New family member (human or animal)
- You left (separation anxiety)
- Veterinarian visit
- Home construction/repair
- Fireworks, storms
How to Recognize:
- Not eating + hiding
- Not eating + restlessness
- Started after a specific event
- Eats when the environment is calm
Solution:
- Create a calm, safe eating space
- Less noise, less people
- Pheromone diffuser (Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats)
- Soothing foods can help
- Time - usually passes within 2-3 days
Reason #5: Spoiling (Yes, That's a Problem)
What's Happening:
The pet learned: "If I don't eat, I'll get something tastier."
How to Recognize:
- Doesn't eat his own food, but eats treats
- Not eating, but energetic and healthy
- You change your food often
- You give food to many people.
- It lasts a long time, but the pet is healthy
Solution (Be Strong!):
- Let the food stand for 15-20 minutes.
- If they don't eat - remove them
- NO treats or human food
- Next meal only after 8-12 hours
- Repeat
A healthy dog/cat WILL NOT starve. They will eat when they are hungry. It usually takes 1-3 days.
Important: This only works if the pet is HEALTHY. If in doubt - consult a vet first!
Reason #6: Fever or Infection
What's Happening:
The body is fighting the disease. Appetite is the first thing that disappears.
How to Recognize:
- Not eating + hot nose (dogs) or ears (cats)
- Not eating + lethargy
- Not eating + hiding
- Maybe sneezing, coughing
- Maybe diarrhea
Solution:
- VETERINARY - necessary
- Antibiotics may be needed
- Lots of water
- A quiet, warm bed
Reason #7: Medications or Vaccinations
What's Happening:
Side effects of medications or vaccines.
How to Recognize:
- Started after medication/vaccination
- Usually a mild case
- Lasts 24-48 hours
- Other symptoms are mild
Solution:
- If it's easy - watch for 24 hours
- Lots of water
- Offer especially delicious food
- If it gets worse - call the vet
Reason #8: Heat (Cats)
What's Happening:
An unsterilized cat often eats less when in heat.
How to Recognize:
- Unsterilized cat
- Eats less but is energetic
- Very vocal (meows a lot)
- Rubbing against things
- Raises tail
Solution:
- Normal phenomenon
- Lasts 7-10 days
- Offer especially delicious food
- Consider sterilization
Reason #9: Old age
What's Happening:
Older pets naturally eat less - slower metabolism, less activity.
How to Recognize:
- Older pet (7+ years)
- Gradually decreasing appetite
- But healthy, active for his age
- Maintains normal weight
Solution:
- Smaller portions, but more often
- Wet food - easier to chew
- Reheated food - stronger smell
- Food adapted for the elderly
- Regular veterinary check-ups
Reason #10: New Food (Too Fast Change)
What's Happening:
A sudden change in food can cause digestive problems or simply... the pet may not like it.
How to Recognize:
- Started after changing food
- Maybe diarrhea
- She sniffed and left.
Solution:
- Go back to old food
- Move GRADUALLY over 7-10 days:
- 1-2 days: 75% old + 25% new
- 3-4 days: 50/50
- 5-6 days: 25% old + 75% new
- 7 days: 100% new
Reason #11: Air Temperature
What's Happening:
Pets naturally eat less in hot weather. More in cold weather.
How to Recognize:
- Eats less in the summer
- But drink lots of water
- Energetic, healthy
- Normal phenomenon
Solution:
- Normal phenomenon - don't worry
- Smaller portions in summer
- Feed during the cooler hours of the day
- Plenty of fresh water
Reason #12: Serious Diseases (Kidney, Liver, Cancer)
What's Happening:
Chronic illnesses reduce appetite.
How to Recognize:
- Long-term loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Lethargy
- Other symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, drinking a lot)
- Older pet
Solution:
- VETERINARY - urgently
- Blood tests are needed.
- Treatment depends on the diagnosis
- Special food may be necessary
How to Encourage Your Pet to Eat (Safe Methods)
For dogs:
- Reheat food - 10-15 seconds in the microwave (stronger smell)
- Add treats: boiled chicken, egg, yogurt
- Hand feeding - some dogs love attention
- Playing before meals - physical activity increases appetite
- Feed quietly - without noise, other dogs
For cats:
- Warm up your food - cats are VERY sensitive to smell
- Tuna juice - a drop on food (not every day!)
- Wet food has a stronger smell than dry food.
- Multiple locations - some cats like choice
- Quiet place - away from the toilet and noise
- Clean bowl - cats are very sensitive to cleanliness

- Monitor your weight - weigh yourself monthly
- Few treats - maximum 10% of daily calories
- Fresh water - always available
Real Stories
Muse - Cat with a Dental Problem
Remember Muse? She hasn't eaten for 2 days.
The vet found a rotten tooth. After the removal, Mūza ate normally again. Rasa said, "I can't believe she suffered in silence."
Lesson: Cats hide their pain. If they don't eat, it's ALWAYS serious.
Rex - The Spoiled Dog
Rex doesn't eat his own food. But he eats chicken, cheese, everything from the table.
His owner, Ieva, was taught: "Be firm. 15 minutes of food, then remove."
After 2 days, Rex ate his food. He was simply spoiled.
The Last Word
I know you're worried when your pet isn't eating. That's normal. You love them.
But here's what I want you to know: it's usually not serious . It's usually easily fixed.
The most important thing is to watch for other symptoms. If your pet is not eating, but is energetic, playful, and drinking water, everything is probably fine.
But if he doesn't eat + other symptoms - vet. It's always better to be careful.
And remember: for cats, 24 hours without food is SERIOUS. For dogs, 48 hours.
If in doubt, call your vet. It's better to feel foolish than to regret it later.
If you need help choosing the right food - I'm here I'll be happy to help!
With love for pets,
Dmitry
PS If your pet is not eating now - don't forget: watch for other symptoms. And if in doubt - a vet!
